WHAT: Hands-on Demo of da Vinci Robot for more than 20 St. Agnes Catholic School 7th 8th grade STREAM students. STREAM is an expansion of STEM and includes a focus on infusing religion throughout all subjects of STEM.

WHY: Nicole M. Fearing, M.D., Board-certified Bariatric and General Surgeon and Medical Director of the Surgical Weight Loss Institute at Menorah Medical Center, is passionate about inspiring kids to pursue careers in medicine, technology and science. As a volunteer at St. Agnes Catholic School in Roeland Park, Kansas, Dr. Fearing works with STREAM (Science Technology Religion, Engineering and Math) students in the eighth grade.
"In a world that's becoming increasingly complex, where success is driven not only by what you know, but by what you can do with what you know, it's critical that our youth are trained and equipped with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to solve tough problems, gather and evaluate evidence and make sense of information," Dr. Fearing says. "These are the types of skills that students, like the ones at St. Agnes, learn by studying subjects collectively known as STREAM."
Dr. Fearing invited Mrs. Schleimer, and her students, for a firsthand experience with the da Vinci® surgical robot, a leading-edge robotic surgical system that has brought minimally invasive surgery to more than 3 million patients worldwide and made a positive impact on patients by reducing hospital inpatient days, decreasing pain, and while enabling the surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision and control.
"Bringing STREAM jobs to action-in real life-will inspire and help these students understand innovation in medicine and how it impacts patients, like the bariatrics patients my team works with," Dr. Fearing says. "I can't think of a better age to expose students to the remarkable advances that are occurring in the field of medicine, improving the quality of people's lives. Stepping out of the classroom and showcasing robotic surgery is certainly a powerful and educational learning experience. We are grateful for St. Agnes for being so committed to these students, and the students are fortunate to have a leader like Mrs. Schleimer, who is making a positive impact on these students.
Menorah Medical Center, a Center of Excellence for Robotic Surgery and part of HCA Midwest Health, Kansas City's leading healthcare and robotic surgery provider-has been at the forefront of robotics with colorectal surgery. Ben Mizrahi, M.D, Board Certified Colon and Rectal Surgeon, has done international and national video conferences from Menorah Medical Center to teach surgeons how to use this technology.
