Diagnosis & Testing
When you come to the Sarcoma Institute, you will be seen by an orthopedic oncologist that may schedule you for various tests, which will be used to assess the status and stage of your tumor. Social, occupational, and functional expectations will be addressed during this initial evaluation. Most of these tests can be performed on the same day as your initial visit. The physician will review your medical history, test results, perform an examination and consult with you about your diagnosis, treatment options, and prognosis. The clinical nurse specialist will assist with patient and family education, social and work issues, and overall knowledge of your tumor and condition.
Your doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history. A physical exam will be done. Tell your doctor if you have:
- Constipation
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Night sweats
- Pain
- Swelling
- Trouble breathing
- Unexplained weight loss
- Vomiting
Tests may include the following:
- Biopsy
- Blood tests
- Bone scan
- Computerized Tomography (CT)
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- X-ray
