Procedures & Treatments

The Sarcoma Institute offers a wide variety of treatments for bone and soft tissue tumors. These treatments are tailored to each patient's specific needs. For example, all members of the team meet biweekly in a prospective manner to discuss the social, nursing, dietary, religious needs as well as the physical and occupational needs of each patient. All aspects of care are in place prior to the patient undergoing the treatment. The treatment plan is formulated in conjunction with the patient and their family members. In our 14 bed Sarcoma Department at Menorah Medical Center, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and dieticians are trained in the care of patients with sarcomas. These health care professionals are prepared to fulfill specific needs of the patient and family members as they arise.

The Sarcoma Institute offers a variety of treatment options such as:

  • Mega prostheses
  • Expandable prostheses
  • Expandable intramedullary nails – all used to maximize limb function
  • Osteoarticular allografts
  • Muscle flaps
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Cryosurgery
  • Pre-operative embolization
  • CyberKnife®

Our treatment options include the most state of the art surgical procedures that involve cancer eradication and limb preservation. Nearly 98 percent of all patients treated at the Sarcoma Institute are treated in a limb salvage fashion, that being, without the need for amputation. State of the art radiographic equipment such as our new short open bore 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner and PET Scanner allow our clinicians to more effectively provide the utmost care to the patient with a musculoskeletal neoplasm. In addition, Menorah Medical Center offers the region’s only Cyberknife®.

Cyberknife® is a painless radiation treatment that can be an alternative to open surgery in many cases. Because Cyberknife® is non-invasive; physicians can treat tumors anywhere in the body without making an incision or even using an anesthetic. The Cyberknife® uses image guidance technology and computer controlled robotics to deliver extremely precise doses of radiation to the tumor therefore avoiding damage to nearby healthy or critical tissues and organs. Cyberknife® delivers focused beams of high energy radiation from virtually any angle all while monitoring in real time for patient or tumor motion.
Because there is no recovery time for this out-patient procedure, patients can enjoy an immediate return to normal activity.
